Brexit: Are you an ostrich or a giraffe?
Like Christmas, Brexit is coming. Deal or no deal, it’s on its way; as guaranteed as a sunset- or a sunrise (depending on your attitude to our departure from the European Union).
As I talk to my clients, helping them craft their corporate communications, whether video or event production, I am struck by how many continue to take the attitude of the proverbial ostrich. The problem has been that we have been hearing about Brexit for so long, and we receive so many conflicting messages, and there is so much uncertainty, that far too many companies are putting their fingers in their ears, heads in the sand and hoping it will all go away. But it won’t. It’s important to cut through the clutter and the political posturing; raise your head up and look beyond the ‘noise’. We know that the only constant is change, so best prepare as best we can. Of course, there are lots and lots of unknowns, but there are certain areas of your business that you know will be affected: workforce, cross-border trade, taxation, currency risk, and contractual issues all need some consideration. It doesn’t have to be too arduous.
The British Chambers have produced a refreshingly simple and practical guide to what you should be doing. The document provides a bit of context, and then provides clear guidance on the questions you should be considering prior to March. Don’t bury your head in the sand, but lift it high and look to what a Brexit future means to you. I’m sure you’re familiar with the 5P’s: preparation prevents particularly poor performance.
