Over 1.3 million business events are held each year. With over 85 million event attendees. I’m sure like me, you’ve been to an event and wondered how on earth it was carried out. Well today we’re going to explore what goes into making events and answer the question; exactly what is event management?
Simply put, an event is a planned public or social occasion. They come in many different forms. Whether that’s a:
- live event – an event that takes place in person with a live audience
- virtual event – an event that takes place online, with remote participants and audience
- hybrid event – an event that combines a live in-person event with a virtual online component
Each one of these event types can incorporate multiple themed occasions. Whether that’s a corporate event, party event, product launch, or an awards dinner. An experienced event production company can make the experience of a virtual event as enjoyable and fulfilling as a live/hybrid event.
Here at Giggabox, we specialise in producing live, virtual, and hybrid events. Click here to check out some of our work!
What is Event Management?
Event management involves the complete production process of events. As well as ensuring the event runs as smoothly as possible.
Think about the last time you attended an event. Everything in sight will most likely have been chosen for that event by an event management company.
If it was a live/hybrid event you attended, the event management team will have obtained items like chairs, billboards, lights. These items will have been chosen based on the theme and tone of the event. For example, you won’t (often) find bright pink chairs at business events!
Often event management companies use what is known as a digital overlay. This means that the event is streamed live to a virtual audience. The recording can then be viewed later by those who missed it.
How are Virtual Events Managed?
The production process for virtual events can differ slightly to live events. This is because the atmosphere of a live event needs to be translated to a virtual form. As you can imagine, this can be pretty hard to achieve!
Many event management companies use a video platform like Zoom or Vimeo for video recording. They then combine the video platform with specialist software that creates a virtual environment around the video.

What makes a Successful Event?
The answer to this question is subjective. However, we at Giggabox believe a successful event is one that puts the experience of the audience and participants first.
This can be achieved in several ways. Firstly, it’s important to make sure the event has a steady flow from each event segment. This may involve a short break between segments for attendees to discuss amongst themselves.
Ultimately, a successful event is one that creates a lasting memory in the mind of the attendee (a positive one specifically!) And also one that ignites a level of anticipation for the next event they visit.
This is why it is so important for the event to be managed in the best way possible!
Clearly, the question, ‘What is event management?’ comes down to many things. Whether that’s the type of event that is being held, the process that goes into making that event type, and the impression you want to create for the attendees.
